I am obsessed with combining and contrasting classical painting techniques with new contemporary ideas. This large oil painting is a re-interpretation of the masterpiece 'The Art of Painting' by Dutch Baroque painter, Johannes Vermeer. By combining 2 classical genres from opposite sides of the planet: traditional Baroque painting and traditional Japanese Ukiyo-e painting (pornography) I was able to communicate a feeling of contemporary sexualism within an academic framework. I want viewers to feel aroused - as well as, lost and confused in outer space.
